Chapter 9 - The Confrontation

Sarah was shoved against the brick pillar of the porch as an officer secured her wrists.

"You're making a mistake!" she screamed, thrashing against the cop. "Mark did it! He's crazy! He set us up!"

Miller stepped aside. I opened the door of the unmarked cruiser and stepped out into the rain.

Sarah’s eyes locked onto mine. Her jaw dropped.

"He didn't set you up, Sarah," Miller said coldly. "He just recorded you setting yourselves up."

I walked slowly up the driveway. Thomas was weeping on the ground, blabbering apologies, begging for a plea deal before he was even read his rights. I ignored him. I stopped a few feet away from my wife.

"You deleted the footage," I said quietly. "But you forgot the golden rule of the digital age, Sarah. Nothing is ever truly gone."

"Mark, please," she whispered, her voice cracking as the reality of her situation finally set in. "I love you. It was Thomas. He made me do it."

"I heard the recording," I replied, feeling absolutely nothing for the woman standing in front of me. "I heard you admit you swung the hammer. Enjoy prison, Sarah. I hear the life insurance policies in there aren't very lucrative."

I turned my back on her as the officers dragged her toward the back of a squad car. Her screams echoed through the quiet suburban neighborhood, a shrill, pathetic sound that faded as the heavy steel doors slammed shut.
