Chapter 7 - The Meeting

It was 11:00 PM. The rain had started to fall, washing away the last remnants of the fog. I called Detective Miller directly at the precinct. I had pulled his direct line from the police directory online.

"Detective Miller," he answered gruffly.

"This is Mark Evans."

There was a pause. I heard the sound of a chair scraping as he likely signaled to a trace team. "Mark. You're making a big mistake running. If you come in, we can protect you."

"I didn't kill Arthur Henderson, Detective," I said. "And I have the proof. But I need you to listen to me very carefully. If I walk into that precinct, the real killers will know, and they will run. I will meet you, alone, under the overpass on 4th Street in twenty minutes. Come by yourself. If I see a squad car, I'm gone."

"Mark, I can't guarantee—"

"I have a video of my wife and my brother planting the evidence," I interrupted. "And I have an audio recording of my wife admitting she swung the hammer. Twenty minutes, Miller."

I hung up and crushed the burner phone under my boot.

I drove to the overpass in a stolen junker I had bought for cash from the motel manager. When I pulled up, Miller was standing there in a tan trench coat, getting soaked in the rain. He was alone.

I stepped out of the car, keeping my hands visible.

"You've got a lot of nerve, Evans," Miller said, his hand resting near his holster.

"I've got nothing to lose," I replied. I tossed him the primary encrypted flash drive and my tablet. "Plug the drive into the tablet. The password is 'Henderson'."

Miller balanced the tablet on the hood of his unmarked car. He watched the security footage of Sarah and Thomas burying the bag. Then, I played the audio clip I had recorded from the living room camera.

“My mess? You swung the hammer, Sarah! You hit the old man when he woke up!”

Miller stared at the screen for a long time. The rain tapped heavily against the metal.

"I'll be damned," the detective whispered.
