Chapter 3 - Following the Money

I retreated deeper into the woods and sat on a damp log. I booted up the burner phone. I didn't have much time before my face was plastered on every news station in the state.
Why Mr. Henderson? Why frame me?
I logged into my banking app via the web browser. The joint checking account was nearly empty. That wasn't right—I had just deposited my annual bonus. I checked the transaction history. Over the last four months, there had been dozens of transfers to an LLC I didn't recognize.
I did a quick public records search on the LLC. The registered agent was Thomas Evans.
My brother was a gambling addict. He had nearly lost his house three years ago until I bailed him out. I had refused to give him another dime. But Sarah had access to the accounts. She had been funding his addiction.
But that didn't explain murder.
Then it hit me. My life insurance policy. It was a massive, two-million-dollar policy I had taken out when Sarah and I first got married. If I went to prison for life, or if I "resisted arrest" and got myself killed, Sarah would get the house, the assets, and eventually, the insurance payout.

Mr. Henderson was just a convenient casualty. They knew about our argument. They knew he kept cash and gold in his safe. They killed two birds with one bloody hammer: they got Henderson's stash to pay off Thomas's immediate debts, and they framed me to secure the two million.
I wasn't just going to clear my name. I was going to tear their lives apart.
