Chapter 5 - The Paranoia Sets In

"You're lying," Thomas choked out, but I could hear the sheer terror in his breath.

"Go look," I said. "But you better look fast. Because I just told Detective Miller to search your vehicle. I told him about the affair, too. Who do you think the cops are going to believe when they see that video? The brother who was holding the bag, or the wife who just inherited two million dollars?"

I hung up.

I didn't have to guess what Thomas was doing. I logged into my smart home app. Sarah had changed the locks, but she hadn't revoked my digital access to the interior security cameras—the ones disguised as motion sensors in the living room and kitchen.

On my phone screen, I watched the live feed of my living room. Sarah was sitting on the couch, drinking a glass of wine, looking remarkably relaxed for a woman whose husband was a fugitive.

Suddenly, the front door burst open. Thomas stormed in, his face purple with rage. He was clutching the black flash drive in his fist.

"You stupid bitch!" Thomas roared, lunging at her.

Sarah dropped her wine glass. It shattered on the hardwood. "Thomas, what are you doing?! The cops are outside!"

"Mark has the video!" Thomas hissed, shoving the flash drive into her face. "He had the footage recovered! He knows everything! He put this in my truck! If the cops had found this..."

"Quiet!" Sarah snapped, her eyes darting toward the windows. "We stick to the plan. Mark is running. That makes him look guilty. Even if he has a video, we say it's deep-faked. We say he's trying to frame us because he found out about us."

"He tipped off the cops about the affair, Sarah! They're going to look at my bank accounts. They're going to see the transfers! We are going down for this!"

I hit Record on my app. The audio was crystal clear.
