Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

Chloe stared at the glowing computer screen, realizing she was looking at a document that could send Dominic to federal prison forever.
She knew she had to close the file immediately and forget she had ever seen the incredibly dangerous numbers.
Before her finger could even reach the mouse, the heavy glass front door of the restaurant chimed loudly.
Chloe instantly minimized the file and grabbed a heavy wine bottle from the nearby rack for protection.
A tall man walked into the dark dining room wearing a long trench coat and a soaking wet fedora.
It was not Dominic or Paulie checking the perimeter before closing.
The man walked straight to the bar, pulled out a gold badge, and slammed it aggressively onto the mahogany wood.
He introduced himself as Detective Miller of the organized crime task force.
He told Chloe he had been watching her for three weeks, completely aware of her massive debt to the Rossi family.
Miller smiled a terrifying, predatory smile and offered her a dangerous, highly illegal deal.
He promised to place her and Sam into the federal witness protection program with new identities and fifty thousand dollars in cash.
In exchange, she had to download Dominic's hidden bribe ledger onto a secure federal flash drive.
Chloe gripped the wine bottle tighter, absolutely refusing to believe a corrupt cop who was likely on Dominic's payroll.
She loudly told Miller that the restaurant was closed and threatened to trigger the silent security alarm.
Miller laughed softly and told her she was incredibly foolish for protecting a man who would eventually murder her.
He pulled a folded photograph from his coat and tossed it casually onto the bar counter.
It was a highly detailed surveillance photo of her deceased father sitting at a dark poker table.

The man dealing the cards to her father in the photograph was not Varga the loan shark.
It was Dominic Rossi, dealing the exact hand that had supposedly ruined her father's entire life.
