Chapter 2 - The Name On The Screen

Clara dropped the burner phone onto the thin carpet as if it had burned her skin.

He had found her.

Despite the fake names, the cash payments, and the cross-country buses, the nightmare had finally caught up to them.

She frantically began throwing Lily's small clothes into a duffel bag.

"Are we going on a trip, Mommy?" Lily asked, tilting her head in confusion.

"Yes, baby, we have to go right now," Clara lied, trying to keep her voice steady.

In the opulent study upstairs, Dominic sat behind his mahogany desk, staring at a glass of scotch.

The door opened, and Enzo walked in with a sleek silver tablet in his hand.

Enzo did not look relaxed.

"You were right, boss," Enzo said, placing the tablet firmly onto the desk.

"Clara's social security number belongs to a woman who died in a car crash twelve years ago."

Dominic leaned forward, his dark eyes narrowing at the glowing screen.

"Did you run her fingerprints?" Dominic asked.

"I pulled a glass she used from the kitchen and ran it through the encrypted federal database," Enzo explained.

Enzo tapped the screen, bringing up a highly classified red-flagged dossier.

"Her real name is Elena Rostova," Enzo revealed.

"She is not a domestic abuse victim running from a bad husband."

Dominic read the file, his chest tightening as he processed the shocking information.

"She is a former witness for the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Dominic said aloud.

"She was in witness protection because she testified against the Volkov Bratva in Chicago."

Enzo nodded grimly.

"The Volkovs have a two-million-dollar bounty on her head, boss."

Dominic stood up, his mind instantly shifting into tactical warfare mode.

"Lock down the estate immediately," Dominic ordered.

Before Enzo could reach for his radio, a massive explosion shattered the reinforced glass of the study windows.
