Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Foam

The underground garage became an absolute nightmare of thick white foam and roaring orange flames.
Marin moved through the blinding chaos with a terrifying, predatory grace that she had not used in years.
She slipped behind the first disoriented mercenary and snapped his neck before he could even raise his rifle.
She caught his falling body and used his tactical vest as a shield just as the second man blindly opened fire.
Bullets hammered into the dead man's armor while Marin calmly returned fire, striking the shooter directly between the eyes.
The third mercenary charged at her through the smoke, swinging a heavy combat knife aimed at her throat.
Marin sidestepped the lethal blade effortlessly and drove her elbow brutally into the side of his knee.
As the man collapsed with a shattered joint, she took his weapon and shot the fourth mercenary across the room.
The entire brutal engagement had lasted less than thirty seconds.
Marin dropped the empty pistol and rushed back to the stairwell to retrieve Adelaide.
She carried the old woman to a heavily armored black SUV that had somehow survived the spreading fire.
Marin quickly searched the dead driver's pockets and found the electronic key fob to start the engine.
She placed Adelaide safely into the back seat and climbed into the driver's side.
Suddenly, the passenger door was violently ripped open from the outside.
A massive man covered in white foam threw himself into the vehicle and pressed a combat knife against Marin's throat.
He leaned in close, staring at the small, faded barcode tattoo hidden behind her left ear.
