Chapter 2 - The Hidden Passageway

Marin stared down at the dead assassin and realized the entire estate was completely compromised from the inside out.
If Julian had orchestrated this hit, none of the remaining security guards could be trusted with their lives.
She walked over to the bed and gently touched Adelaide's trembling shoulder.
"Your youngest son is trying to kill you tonight," Marin whispered in a calm, steady voice.
Adelaide did not cry or gasp in shock, but simply closed her eyes with profound, heartbreaking resignation.
"We cannot stay in this room," Marin stated as she checked the magazine of her stolen pistol.
Adelaide raised her weak hand and pointed a shaky finger toward the massive antique bookshelf against the far wall.
"There is a hidden service elevator behind those books," Adelaide rasped quietly.
Marin quickly pushed the heavy wooden bookcase aside, revealing a sleek steel door hidden seamlessly in the wall.
She carefully lifted the frail woman from the bed and placed her into a lightweight transport wheelchair.
Marin pushed Adelaide into the dark elevator and pressed the button for the underground garage.
The elevator descended silently for a few seconds before suddenly grinding to a violent, terrifying halt between floors.
The emergency lights flickered on, casting a dim red glow over the cramped metal box.
Marin looked up and saw a small digital screen flashing an error code above the control panel.
Someone in the main security room had detected the elevator's movement and remotely locked the car in place.
The distinct smell of raw gasoline began to filter into the elevator shaft from the vents above.

Julian was not just trying to shoot them anymore.
He had ordered his men to burn the entire mansion to the ground with them trapped inside.
