Chapter 8 - The Standoff

The diner fell into absolute, terrifying silence except for the sound of rain hitting the roof.
Chloe held her breath, staring down the dark, hollow barrel of the bodyguard's weapon.
David instantly lunged forward, trying to shield his daughter with his own body.
"Don't you dare touch her!" David roared, his face flushed with pure, desperate rage.
Arthur casually raised his hand, signaling his loyal bodyguard to hold his fire for a moment.
"You see, Sarah, this is why you will always lose," Arthur taunted her cruelest weakness.
"You care about other people, while I only care about winning."
Sarah lowered her weapon slightly, completely unwilling to let an innocent girl die for her revenge.
"Let the kids go, Arthur," Sarah begged, her voice cracking with defeat.
"They have absolutely nothing to do with this family war."
Arthur chuckled darkly and shook his head in amusement.
"The boy signs the papers, and you hand over that pathetic little gun," Arthur negotiated.
Marcus grabbed the expensive pen again, ready to sign away his entire birthright just to save Chloe.
But David knew that once the papers were signed, Arthur would have no reason to keep them alive.
David carefully slipped his phone out of his pocket, keeping it hidden behind his back.
He blindly tapped the screen, trying to send the audio recording to his trusted lawyer.
The file successfully sent just as the second bodyguard noticed David's suspicious movement.
"He has a phone!" the second bodyguard shouted, raising his weapon toward David.
Chaos erupted in the small diner in a fraction of a second.
Marcus instinctively threw his entire body weight forward, tackling the first bodyguard to the sticky floor.
The bodyguard's gun fired wildly into the air, shattering the fluorescent lights above them.
Glass rained down everywhere as the room was plunged into sudden, terrifying darkness.
David punched the second bodyguard squarely in the jaw, sending the man crashing into the counter.
Chloe scrambled under the booth, dragging Sarah down with her to stay out of the crossfire.
In the dark confusion, Arthur angrily stumbled backward, swinging his heavy silver cane blindly.
Suddenly, the loud, piercing wail of police sirens echoed loudly from down the street.
Arthur realized David's lawyer had already called the authorities using the audio evidence.
Arthur backed toward the front door, glaring hatefully into the dark corner where Chloe was hiding.

"Do not think you have won, David," Arthur yelled over the approaching sirens.
"I might go to jail, but you will have to live knowing this pathetic girl isn't even your biological daughter."
