Chapter 2 - The Driveway Confrontation

David did not even hesitate for a single second.
He pushed past the two stunned teenagers and marched straight out the front door.
Chloe grabbed Marcus by the hand and practically dragged him outside to follow her father.
A silver sedan was idling in their circular driveway under the warm evening sun.
A beautiful woman with dark hair was sitting in the driver's seat, typing on her phone.
David walked right up to her window and tapped aggressively on the glass.
The woman looked up, and all the color instantly drained from her beautiful face.
She rolled the window down with a trembling hand.
"Hello, Sarah," David said in a voice that was dangerously calm.
"David," she whispered back, her eyes darting nervously toward Marcus.
"You have a son," David stated flatly, crossing his arms over his chest.
Sarah gripped the steering wheel so hard her knuckles turned entirely white.
"He is not yours, David," she replied quickly, her voice pitching up in panic.
"He has the family scar, Sarah," David countered, his voice rising in anger.
Chloe stood on the front porch, feeling as though she was watching a terrible nightmare unfold.
She looked at Marcus, who looked completely devastated by the secret his mother had kept.
"Get in the car, Marcus," Sarah suddenly ordered, unlocking the passenger door.
"Mom, what is going on?" Marcus demanded, refusing to move from Chloe's side.
"I said get in the damn car right now!" she screamed, tears finally spilling down her cheeks.
Marcus reluctantly let go of Chloe's hand and walked slowly toward the silver sedan.
He climbed inside, giving Chloe one last heartbroken look through the window.
Sarah threw the car into reverse and sped out of the driveway, leaving black tire marks on the concrete.
David stood in the empty driveway, burying his face in his hands.
Chloe ran up to him, demanding to know the entire truth immediately.
David promised he would explain everything, but he needed a drink first.
He walked back into the house and headed straight for his private study.
Chloe followed close behind, but paused when she noticed a piece of paper sticking out from beneath a heavy book on his desk.
It was an old bank statement that David must have pulled out along with the photograph.

She pulled the paper free and read the handwritten ink at the top.
It was a canceled check for two hundred thousand dollars, made out to Sarah eighteen years ago.
