Chapter 1 - The Secret Garden

Emma’s tiny voice carried perfectly through the damp morning air.

Alessandro stood completely still behind the ivy-covered wall, his heart hammering against his ribs.

“Mama cried again last night, Papa,” the three-year-old whispered to the photograph.

“She said we might have to leave our house and sleep in the car because the bad men want their money.”

Emma carefully poured the last drops of water from her tin cup onto the soil.

“Can you ask the angels to help Mama? Please?”

Alessandro closed his eyes, fighting the sharp, unfamiliar sting of tears threatening to fall.

He had spent three years building an impenetrable fortress around his shattered heart.

He had ruthlessly silenced any man in New York who dared to show him pity or weakness.

Yet here, in the abandoned garden where his own daughter used to play, a little girl was breaking him entirely apart.

He could not simply walk away and pretend he had never heard her desperate prayer.

He turned slowly and walked back across the wet grass toward the grand kitchen entrance.

He found Sophia frantically searching the pantry, her face pale with rising panic.

“Mr. Moretti, I am so sorry,” she stammered, wringing her apron with trembling hands.

“I only looked away for one second to get the flour, and Emma was gone.”

Alessandro raised his hand gently, a gesture that completely silenced her frantic apology.

“She is safe, Sophia,” he said softly, pointing toward the large glass windows.

“She is out by the oak tree in the garden.”

Sophia exhaled a massive breath of relief and rushed toward the heavy oak door.

“Wait,” Alessandro commanded, his voice returning to the authoritative tone of a mafia boss.

Sophia froze instantly, fully expecting to be fired on the spot for her child's trespassing.

“I accidentally overheard your phone call last night regarding your eviction,” he stated evenly.

Sophia looked down at the marble floor, her cheeks burning with deep, humiliating shame.

“Please, sir, I am handling it,” she whispered. “It will not affect my work.”

“How much do you owe?” he asked, ignoring her pathetic attempt at saving face.

Sophia hesitated for a long moment, terrified of revealing her complete financial ruin.

“Four thousand dollars, sir,” she finally confessed.

Alessandro pulled a thick, silver money clip from his tailored suit pocket.

He peeled off fifty crisp hundred-dollar bills and placed them gently onto the kitchen island.

“Pay your landlord today,” he ordered. “And take the rest of the week off paid.”

Sophia stared at the massive stack of cash in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.

“I cannot accept this, Mr. Moretti,” she gasped. “It is too much.”

“It is not a gift, Sophia. It is an advance on your salary,” he lied smoothly to spare her pride.

Before she could argue further, Emma walked into the kitchen holding the worn photograph.

She looked up at Alessandro with wide, innocent brown eyes.

“Thank you for letting me visit your garden, mister,” Emma smiled.

She held the photograph up to show him the picture of her deceased father.

Alessandro looked closely at the faded image of Daniel Carter in his construction helmet.

His blood instantly ran completely cold.

Daniel Carter had not died in a random scaffolding collapse in Queens.

He had been murdered by Alessandro’s own men because he witnessed something he shouldn't have.
