Chapter 10 - The Final Judgment

Vanessa aimed the weapon directly at the center of my chest.

She pulled the trigger without a single ounce of hesitation.

The bullet struck me with a heavy thud, but I did not fall.

I was wearing a military-grade Kevlar vest underneath my jacket.

Before she could fire a second shot, Marcus rushed into the room from behind me.

He tackled Vanessa aggressively to the floor and kicked the gun under the crib.

The local police arrived minutes later, having been briefed by Marcus earlier that evening.

Vanessa and Thomas were dragged out of the estate in heavy steel handcuffs.

I hugged my beautiful daughter and my safe, smiling baby boy.

I formally apologized to Maria and reinstated her as the estate manager with a massive raise.

The conspirators were sentenced to decades in federal prison.

We finally had our peaceful, happy lives back.

But three months later, the mailman delivered a strange, unmarked black envelope to my door.

I opened it and found a fresh photograph of my children playing safely in the park.

The handwriting on the back of the photo was incredibly familiar.

It belonged to my first wife, who had been pronounced legally dead five years ago.
