Chapter 1 - The Digital Witness
I stared at the glowing screen of my daughter’s phone.
My hands were shaking so violently that the image kept blurring.
Lily stood beside my heavy oak desk in complete silence.
I pressed the play button for the third time.
The footage started with a clear view of the grand staircase.
Vanessa was standing at the very top of the steps.
Her hand was resting firmly on the handle of my son’s stroller.
She looked left and right to make sure the hallway was entirely empty.
Then she violently shoved the stroller forward.
I watched in absolute horror as the stroller tipped over the edge.
A split second later, Maria rushed into the frame from the side hallway.
The brave housekeeper dove down the stairs without hesitating.
She sacrificed her own body to cushion the fall and save my infant son.
My chest tightened as I realized I had just fired the woman who saved my child.
I had comforted the monster who tried to murder him.
I wanted to march upstairs and throw Vanessa out of my house immediately.
But as the video looped again, I noticed something shiny in Vanessa’s left hand.
