Chapter 9 - The Sign of Salvation

Daniel screamed and threw his body forcefully into Rachel, tackling her to the wooden floorboards.

The bullet grazed Daniel's shoulder, tearing through his jacket and sending a spray of blood into the air.

Victor approached them slowly, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred.

He aimed the weapon at Daniel's head, preparing to end the fight once and for all.

Rachel reached into her coat and pulled out the old cardboard sign she had stolen from the garage window months ago.

She held the flimsy piece of cardboard up like a shield, tears streaming down her dirty face.

Victor stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes widening in absolute shock as he read the back of the sign.

Daniel had unknowingly scribbled Victor's most guarded secret bank account number on that exact piece of cardboard years ago.

Rachel screamed that she had already programmed the account to empty entirely if she did not enter a cancellation code.

Victor lowered his weapon, his greed completely overpowering his intense desire for bloody revenge.

He demanded the code, promising to let them both walk away alive and unharmed.

Rachel closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and whispered a sequence of numbers into the cold night air.

Victor frantically typed the numbers into his phone, waiting for the confirmation of his saved fortune.

The phone screen flashed red, displaying a message that the account had been seized by the federal government.

The deafening sound of police sirens and helicopter blades suddenly ripped through the foggy night.
