Chapter 8 - The Interrogation

Dominic stared at the phone in his hand, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscle ticked.
"She has nothing to say to you, Victor," Dominic growled.
"Oh, I think she does," Costa replied smoothly.
"Especially since her new husband murdered her real father."
Dominic abruptly ended the call and crushed the phone in his massive hand.
He threw the broken pieces onto the concrete floor of the bunker.
I stared at him, my heart hammering violently against my bruised ribs.
"What did he mean by my real father?" I demanded, my voice shaking.
Dominic rubbed his face, looking suddenly exhausted.
"The man who raised you in Cleveland was your adopted father," Dominic explained quietly.
The walls of the bunker felt like they were shrinking, closing in on me.
"My mother told me he was my biological father," I argued desperately.
"Your mother lied to protect you from the truth," he said, stepping closer.
"Your real father was Julian Vance, the former head of the Chicago syndicate."
I shook my head, refusing to accept the insane reality he was presenting.
"I am a waitress, Dominic, I am not a mafia princess."
"You are a waitress because Julian Vance hid you in Ohio to keep you safe from his rivals," he countered.
"Is Victor Costa telling the truth?" I asked, looking directly into his dark eyes.
"Did you kill Julian Vance?"
Dominic held my gaze without blinking.
"I did not pull the trigger, Clara, but my family gave the order."
Tears blurred my vision as I realized the man who had bought my life had also destroyed it.
"Why would you marry the daughter of the man your family killed?" I sobbed.
"Because I read your file a year ago, and I fell in love with a ghost," he confessed softly.
Suddenly, Enzo rushed into the bunker, completely out of breath.
"Boss, Costa just sent a secure message to the mainframe," Enzo panted.
"He wants a face-to-face meeting at the neutral docks in one hour."
May you like
Enzo looked at me nervously before continuing.
"And he said if Clara doesn't come, he will send us the head of her mother."
