Chapter 2 - The Escape

"Dominic!" I screamed, pushing myself backward against the pillows.
The nurse lunged forward, plunging the needle toward the IV tube.
Dominic moved faster than I could comprehend.
He grabbed the nurse by the back of her neck and slammed her face into the wall.
The syringe dropped to the floor, shattering the plastic tube.
The woman collapsed into a heap, unconscious before she even hit the tiles.
Dominic pulled a heavy black pistol from a shoulder holster hidden beneath his suit jacket.
"We have to move right now," he ordered, his eyes scanning the hallway through the small door window.
"I can barely breathe," I gasped, clutching my heavily bandaged chest.
"If we stay here, you won't ever breathe again," Dominic said coldly.
He ripped the IV line out of my arm, causing a sharp sting of pain.
He effortlessly scooped me out of the hospital bed, holding me tightly against his chest.
The cold air hit my bare legs as we rushed into the corridor.
Three men in dark suits immediately surrounded us, drawing their weapons.
"Costa's men breached the perimeter," a tall man named Enzo said quickly.
"Get the car to the loading dock," Dominic commanded, running toward the service elevator.
The hospital was in utter chaos as alarms blared above us.
We stepped into the heavy metal elevator, and Enzo swiped a security card to take us down.
I pressed my face against Dominic's shoulder, terrified of the violence echoing above us.
"Who was that woman?" I whispered, my teeth chattering from shock.
"A cleaner sent to finish the job," Dominic replied, his jaw clenched tight.
The elevator doors opened to the dark underground parking garage.
A black armored SUV was waiting with the engine roaring.
Dominic placed me gently into the backseat and climbed in beside me.
Enzo jumped into the driver's seat and slammed his foot on the gas pedal.
The vehicle tore out of the garage and into the rainy streets of New York.
I looked down at the floorboard and saw a cracked cell phone belonging to the assassin.
