Chapter 6 - The Secret Enemy

I froze, staring down the barrel of Isabella’s weapon.

"What are you doing?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Isabella stood up slowly, her elegant face twisted into a mask of pure hatred.

"I am correcting a mistake," she said coldly.

The distant, muffled sounds of the battle raging above us seemed entirely unimportant now.

"I took seven bullets for you," I reminded her, clutching my bleeding side.

Isabella laughed, a dry, humorless sound that sent shivers down my spine.

"You really think Victor Costa ordered that hit at the hotel?" she asked.

My mind raced, struggling to piece together the fragments of truth.

"Costa wants Dominic dead," I reasoned.

"Victor Costa is a street thug who lacks the imagination to hire professional assassins," Isabella sneered.

She took a step closer, the gun unwavering in her steady hand.

"I ordered the hit at the hotel," Isabella confessed casually.

The air rushed out of my lungs as the horrifying truth finally clicked into place.

"You hired the shooter to kill me," I breathed in realization.

Isabella nodded, her eyes flashing with malice.

"My son is obsessed with you, Clara, and an obsessed boss makes fatal mistakes."

She clicked the hammer of the revolver back with her thumb.

"I thought having you killed in the crossfire of a fake assassination attempt would solve my problem."

"But I saved you instead," I said, a bitter irony washing over me.

"Yes, you did," she sighed.

"And now my foolish son has married the daughter of his greatest enemy to protect her."

Before I could process her bizarre claim about my family, the steel door of the vault violently shook.

Someone was trying to blast the electronic lock from the outside.

Isabella quickly hid the gun behind her back as the heavy door groaned and swung open.

Dominic stood in the doorway, covered in soot and blood, holding a smoking shotgun.
