Chapter 5 - The Ambush

I stared at my name in the ledger, feeling a cold dread settle deep into my bones.

Dominic Rossi had essentially purchased me a year ago, and I never even knew it.

I closed the book and shoved it back into the hidden compartment.

I needed to confront him, no matter how dangerous he was.

I marched out of the study and headed toward the main dining hall.

Before I could reach the double doors, the estate's emergency alarms suddenly blared to life.

The shrill, piercing sound echoed violently off the stone walls.

Armed guards flooded the hallways, shouting tactical commands in Italian.

Enzo grabbed my arm, nearly dragging me off my feet.

"Victor Costa's men just breached the outer gates," Enzo yelled over the sirens.

"Where is Dominic?" I asked frantically.

"He is on the front line holding them back," Enzo said, pulling me toward the basement stairs.

The sounds of heavy automatic gunfire erupted outside the mansion.

Windows shattered in the distance, followed by the terrifying thud of an explosion.

Enzo dragged me down a dark stone corridor leading deep underground.

We reached a heavy steel door that looked like a bank vault.

Enzo punched a code into the keypad, and the massive door swung open.

"Get inside and do not open it for anyone except me or Dominic," Enzo ordered.

He shoved me into the dimly lit panic room and slammed the door shut behind me.

The heavy locks clicked into place, plunging the room into absolute silence.

I backed up against the cold steel wall, gasping for air as my chest wounds throbbed.

"You should not be in here," a cold, familiar voice echoed from the shadows.

I jumped, peering into the dark corner of the bunker.

A small lamp flickered on, revealing Isabella sitting perfectly still in a leather chair.

She did not look like the sweet, terrified woman I had saved at the hotel.

She raised a silver revolver and pointed it directly at my chest.
