Chapter 9 - The Perfect Trap

"Daniel, it's over, we're safe," Martin said, breathing heavily as he leaned against the concrete pillar.
Daniel slowly backed away into the shadows, his eyes locked on the tall FBI agent giving orders.
"They aren't here to save us, Martin," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling for the first time.
Sarah looked confused, stepping toward the flashing red and blue lights.
"What are you talking about? They're arresting Thorne's men!" Sarah pointed out.
It was true; the SWAT team had quickly disarmed the mercenaries and forced them to the ground.
The lead FBI agent walked purposefully toward Martin, a confident, predatory smile resting on his face.
"Mr. Hale, I am Special Agent Miller, you are completely safe now," the agent said smoothly.
Martin reached out to shake the man's hand, feeling a profound sense of gratitude.
"Thank you, Agent Miller, you arrived just in time."
Miller smiled wider, glancing toward the shadows where Daniel was standing.
"We received an anonymous tip about a hostage situation involving Vanguard Corporation."
Daniel stepped out of the darkness, his hands raised slowly in the air.
"You didn't get a tip, Miller, you tracked the microchip," Daniel stated coldly.
Miller's smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, cold calculation.
"Hand over the ledger, Daniel, and I might let you survive the night," Miller ordered, drawing his service weapon.
Martin watched in absolute horror as the SWAT officers surrounding them all raised their rifles and pointed them directly at Martin and Sarah.
They were not acting like police officers; they were acting like an execution squad.
"Thorne owns the local FBI field office," Daniel explained bitterly, looking at Martin.
"The ledger proves Miller has been taking bribes from Vanguard for over a decade."
Sarah backed away, grabbing her father's arm in sheer panic.
"If you give him the chip, he's going to kill us anyway to cover his tracks," Martin realized aloud.
Miller cocked the hammer of his pistol, aiming it directly at Sarah's chest.
"You are a smart man, Mr. Hale, but unfortunately, your luck has finally run out."
"Give me the chip, Daniel, on the count of three."
"One."
Daniel reached slowly into his pocket, his face completely unreadable.
"Two."
Daniel pulled out a small black flash drive, holding it up in the harsh garage lighting.
"Three."
Instead of tossing it to Miller, Daniel violently crushed the flash drive beneath his heavy boot, shattering the plastic and destroying the microchip completely.
Miller screamed in absolute rage, his face turning a deep, violent shade of red.
"Kill them all!" Miller ordered, raising his gun to fire.
Before a single trigger could be pulled, the entire parking garage was plunged into complete and utter darkness.
The heavy thud of a massive EMP blast echoed through the concrete structure, killing the power to the police cruisers and all the lights.
A chaotic symphony of suppressed gunfire erupted in the pitch-black garage.
Martin pulled Sarah to the floor, covering her head as bullet casings rained down around them.
He heard men screaming, heavy bodies hitting the pavement, and the rapid, precise movement of someone hunting in the dark.
When the emergency backup lights finally flickered to life ten seconds later, the scene was completely transformed.
Every single corrupt SWAT officer was lying unconscious on the ground.
Agent Miller was on his knees, clutching a bleeding shoulder, completely disarmed.
Standing over him, holding a smoking pistol, was a woman dressed in black tactical gear.

She turned around, removed her night-vision goggles, and offered Martin a warm, familiar smile.
It was Evelyn, and she was not working for Thorne at all.
