Chapter 4 - The Hollow Heel

The silence in the warehouse was thicker than the dust in the air.

Martin froze, looking back and forth between his terrified daughter and the man who claimed to be his savior.

Daniel did not lower his weapon, though he kept the barrel pointed safely toward the floor.

"Sarah, you have to listen to me," Daniel said, taking a slow step forward.

"Stay back!" she screamed, searching the floor desperately for a weapon.

Martin's protective instincts took over completely.

He snatched up one of the dropped assault rifles from a dead guard and aimed it directly at Daniel's chest.

"Put the gun down, Daniel," Martin ordered, his hands shaking but his voice deadly serious.

Daniel sighed heavily, placing his pistol on a wooden crate and raising his empty hands.

"I took her from her apartment because they were already on their way to kill her," Daniel explained calmly.

"You threw me in the trunk of a car and tied me to a chair!" Sarah cried out indignantly.

"If I had asked politely, you would have called the police, and Vanguard's corrupt officers would have intercepted you," Daniel countered.

He reached slowly into his pocket, keeping his eyes on the rifle in Martin's hands.

He pulled out his phone, tapped the screen, and tossed it to the ground near Sarah's feet.

"Look at the security footage from your apartment lobby, Sarah."

Sarah cautiously picked up the phone, her eyes scanning the glowing video feed.

The video showed heavily armed men kicking in the door to her apartment just five minutes after Daniel had dragged her out.

The men in the video then planted explosive charges, blowing her entire living room to ashes.

Sarah dropped the phone, the reality of her narrow escape washing over her in a wave of nausea.

Martin slowly lowered the rifle, the heavy weight of the weapon pulling his arms down.

"Why is Vanguard trying to execute my entire family?" Martin asked, exhausted and confused.

Daniel walked over to retrieve his pistol, checking the magazine carefully.

"Because they found out about the money you've been hiding for the Castellano crime family since 1998."

Martin's breath hitched in his throat, and the color drained from his face completely.

Sarah looked at her father, completely baffled by the accusation.

"Dad, what is he talking about?" Sarah asked.

Martin looked away, shame and guilt radiating from his hunched shoulders.

"Twenty-five years ago, the shop was going under, and I made a terrible mistake to pay for your mother's medical bills," Martin confessed softly.

"They gave me two million dollars in cash to hide until the federal heat died down, but their boss was murdered before he could collect it."

Daniel stepped closer, his eyes cold and urgent.

"Vanguard bought out the remnants of the Castellano syndicate, and they want their seed money back."

Martin rubbed his face, letting out a hollow, bitter laugh.

"They burned down the shop for nothing, then," Martin said.

Daniel frowned deeply.

"What do you mean?"

Martin looked up, a spark of his old defiance returning to his tired eyes.

"The money was hidden inside the hollowed-out heels of a thousand pairs of old shoes."

Sarah gasped, realizing the true nature of her father's lifelong hoarding habit.

"But I moved all those boxes to a secure storage facility on the edge of town last week," Martin revealed.

Daniel grabbed his jacket, a sudden sense of urgency gripping him.

"We need to get to that facility and secure the cash before they find the rental receipt in your shop's ruins."

They rushed out of the warehouse and piled back into the armored sedan.

As Daniel sped down the highway toward the storage facility, a police siren wailed in the distance.

Martin looked out the window, praying that the nightmare was almost over.

But when they pulled up to the isolated storage unit, the heavy metal door was already rolled wide open.
