Chapter 7 - The Master of the Board

The luxurious penthouse was completely silent except for the soft playing of classical music in the background.

Martin kept his rifle raised, his eyes scanning the massive room for the shooter.

Evelyn struggled violently against her restraints, her eyes wide with terror as the red laser dotted her forehead.

"Lower the weapons, gentlemen, or the ghost dies for real this time."

A man stepped out from the shadows of the expansive glass balcony, clapping his hands in a slow, mocking rhythm.

It was Elias Thorne.

He wore a perfectly tailored midnight-blue suit and held a crystal glass of amber whiskey.

Behind him stood a massive bodyguard holding a sniper rifle equipped with a laser sight.

"Let her go, Thorne," Martin demanded, stepping in front of Sarah to shield her.

Thorne chuckled softly, taking a slow sip of his expensive drink.

"Let her go?" Thorne asked with feigned surprise.

"She came to me with a brilliant plan to steal my money, and then she tried to keep it all for herself."

Evelyn whimpered through the gag, shaking her head frantically.

Daniel kept his pistol aimed perfectly at Thorne's chest, his finger resting lightly on the trigger.

"You don't care about the money anymore, Thorne," Daniel stated coldly.

"You care about what else Martin hid in those shoes twenty-five years ago."

Thorne stopped smiling, his cold gray eyes locking onto Daniel.

"Ah, the mysterious savior finally speaks," Thorne mused, setting his glass on a marble table.

Martin looked at Daniel, utterly confused by the conversation.

"What is he talking about, Daniel?" Martin asked without taking his eyes off the bodyguard.

Thorne laughed again, a harsh, echoing sound.

"You mean you haven't told the old cobbler the truth yet?"

Daniel remained perfectly silent, his jaw clenched so tight it looked like it might shatter.

"Tell me what!" Martin demanded, a sickening feeling of dread pooling in his stomach.

"The money was just a distraction, Mr. Hale," Thorne explained, walking slowly around the room.

"Before the Castellano boss was murdered, he hid his master blackmail ledger."

Thorne pointed a manicured finger directly at Martin's chest.

"That ledger contains the names of every corrupt politician, judge, and police chief that Vanguard Corporation currently owns."

Sarah gasped, realizing the true scale of the conspiracy they had stumbled into.

"And my sources tell me that the boss gave that ledger to a humble cobbler to hide in the heel of a very specific pair of children's shoes."

Martin's breath caught in his throat as the memory hit him like a physical blow.

The battered children's shoes that Daniel had brought into the shop just that morning.

He had felt something hard and rigid beneath the leather, something he had dismissed as a bad repair job.

"I want the shoes, Daniel," Thorne demanded, his voice dropping all pretense of civility.

"Give me the ledger, and I will let the cobbler and his lovely daughter walk out of here alive."

Daniel slowly lowered his pistol, reaching his free hand into his heavy jacket pocket.

He pulled out the small, battered leather shoes and held them up by the laces.

Thorne's eyes lit up with absolute greed.

"Bring them to me," Thorne ordered.

Daniel took one step forward, then stopped.

"You want them so badly, Thorne?" Daniel asked softly.

Before anyone could react, Daniel tossed the shoes directly over the edge of the glass balcony, sending them plummeting forty stories down into the dark city streets.
