Chapter 10 - The Cobbler's Truth

"You really thought I would betray my own family for a payout?" Evelyn asked, offering a hand to help Martin off the floor.

Martin stared at his supposedly dead wife, too stunned to even speak.

"Mom?" Sarah whispered, tears instantly filling her eyes as she ran forward and embraced her.

Evelyn hugged her daughter tightly, stroking her hair with genuine affection.

"I had to fake my death ten years ago to infiltrate Vanguard from the inside," Evelyn explained rapidly.

"I needed them to trust me so I could dismantle their entire criminal network."

She kicked Agent Miller's discarded weapon away and tied his hands with heavy zip ties.

Daniel walked over, holstering his weapon and nodding respectfully to Evelyn.

"The EMP charge worked perfectly, Evelyn," Daniel said, checking the perimeter.

Martin looked between Daniel and Evelyn, realizing they had been working together the entire time.

"You blew up my shop, dragged us through a warzone, and faked a hostage situation just to flush out the corrupt FBI agents?" Martin asked, a mix of anger and relief in his voice.

"It was the only way to get all the major players in one room," Evelyn apologized sincerely.

The sound of real, federal sirens echoed in the distance, growing louder by the second.

"My contacts at the Department of Justice are pulling up right now," Evelyn assured them.

"Thorne, Miller, and the rest of Vanguard are going away for the rest of their lives."

Within minutes, the garage was swarming with legitimate federal agents who took the corrupt officers into custody.

Thorne was dragged down from his penthouse in handcuffs, screaming threats that no one listened to.

The nightmare was finally, truly over.

Hours later, as the sun began to rise over the city, the four of them sat in a quiet, empty diner down the street from the ruined shoe shop.

The waitress poured them hot coffee, blissfully unaware of the war they had just survived.

Martin held Sarah's hand on one side and Evelyn's hand on the other, feeling his family completely whole for the first time in a decade.

"So, what happens now?" Martin asked, looking over his coffee cup.

Evelyn smiled softly. "Now, Vanguard's assets are seized, and the government will compensate you handsomely for the destruction of your property."

Daniel slid a small paper bag across the diner table toward Martin.

"I managed to grab these from the trunk of my car before the crash," Daniel said quietly.

Martin opened the bag and pulled out the battered children's leather shoes that had started this entire ordeal just twenty-four hours ago.

"Thank you, Daniel," Martin said, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace.

He ran his thumb gently over the dry leather, admiring the old stitches he had made so long ago.

But as his thumb brushed the heel, he stopped.

The tiny patch he thought he recognized felt entirely wrong.

The stitching was machine-made, perfectly uniform, completely devoid of the human imperfection of a hand-sewn cobbler's needle.

Martin flipped the shoe over, his blood suddenly turning to ice in his veins.

He looked up slowly at Daniel, noticing for the first time a cold, dead emptiness in the younger man's eyes.

"You're not Daniel, are you?" Martin whispered, his voice trembling with a new, terrifying dread.

The man across the table smiled a chilling, perfectly calculated smile as he casually slipped a silenced pistol under the table, aiming it directly at Sarah's stomach.

"Daniel died in an alley twenty years ago," the imposter said softly.

"I'm the one who killed him, and you just helped me eliminate every single one of my rivals so I could take over the syndicate."
