Chapter 9 - THE VERDICT

The courtroom was dead silent as Marcus was dragged away in handcuffs. The judge, a stern woman with silver hair, looked over her glasses at Julian, and then at Maya, who was sitting in the front row, squeezing Leo’s hand.

"Mr. Vance," the judge said softly. "The state's primary concern is the welfare of the child. You are a single father with a demanding empire. Can you provide the emotional stability this little girl needs?"

Before Julian could answer, Maya stood up. She was no longer a dirty, starving runaway. She wore a neat blue dress, her head held high.

"He's not just a boss, Your Honor," Maya said, her voice clear and brave. "He's my dad. He sat on the floor with me when I was scared. He saved me from the rain. And... and he makes Leo smile."

Leo stood up next to her, looking at the judge. "She's my sister," the little boy said firmly.

The judge smiled, a warm, genuine expression, and banged her gavel. "Petition for permanent adoption granted."
