Chapter 9 - The Grandfather's Sins

Lily couldn't speak, her mind completely shattered by the sight of the old man.

He looked exactly the same as the day of his funeral, just a little grayer around the temples.

He didn't look at Lily with any warmth or familial love.

He looked at her the same way Victoria did, like a valuable piece of medical equipment.

He calmly explained that he had faked his death to avoid a massive federal investigation into his illegal genetics research.

He had funded Victoria's entire operation because his own granddaughter happened to possess the exact genetic anomaly he had spent his life searching for.

He didn't care about David, and he certainly didn't care about Lily.

He raised the scalpel, telling her to hold still so he could insert the IV line.

Lily felt the paralyzing fear melt away into pure, boiling anger.

She was done being a victim for these monsters.

She used the incredible, returning strength in her legs to kick upward with brutal force.

Both of her feet smashed into the bottom of the heavy metal medical tray.

The tray flipped upward, crashing directly into her grandfather’s face.

Surgical tools and glass vials shattered across the sterile floor.

The old man stumbled backward, dropping the scalpel as blood poured from his broken nose.

Lily twisted her body, stretching her hand out to grab the fallen scalpel off the floor.

She blindly slashed at the thick leather straps holding her wrists to the bed.

The leather snapped, and she quickly freed her legs.

She jumped off the bed, her bare feet hitting the freezing tiles, and bolted for the door.

She ran out into the empty white hallway, ignoring the blaring alarms that suddenly echoed through the facility.

She turned a corner at full speed, desperately looking for an exit sign.

Instead, she slammed violently into the chest of a heavily armed security guard.

The guard grabbed her tightly by the shoulders, his grip like iron.

Lily screamed and raised the scalpel to strike him.

The guard quickly pulled down his black tactical mask, revealing David's bruised and exhausted face.
