Chapter 8 - The Desert Clinic

The ambulance hit a massive pothole, tossing Lily violently against the leather restraints.
She pretended to still be unconscious, keeping her breathing slow and even.
The two fake paramedics didn't even look in her direction.
The vehicle finally slowed down and drove through a heavy metal security gate.
When the back doors opened, blinding, hot desert sunlight flooded the cabin.
They rolled Lily’s stretcher out into the sweltering heat.
She squinted through her eyelashes and saw a massive, concrete compound hidden deep in a rocky canyon.
There were no hospital signs, no windows, and armed guards patrolling the perimeter.
They wheeled her down a sterile white hallway and into a freezing surgical room.
The paramedics locked her wheels in place and walked out without saying a word.
A moment later, the heavy steel door hissed open.
Victoria walked in, wearing a pristine white laboratory coat over her designer clothes.
She stood at the foot of the stretcher, smiling down at Lily like a proud scientist.
"You have absolutely perfect genetics, Lily," Victoria whispered coldly.
Victoria explained that she didn't just want the trust fund money.
She had a biological daughter of her own hidden away in this facility, a girl dying of a rare blood disease.
Lily’s bone marrow was a perfect, one-in-a-billion match.
Victoria had been poisoning Lily to keep her weak and compliant until her own daughter was ready for the transplant.
"The surgery will be quite painful, and unfortunately, you won't survive it," Victoria smiled.
The door opened again, and a tall doctor walked in wearing surgical scrubs and a mask.
Victoria told the doctor to prep the patient for extraction and walked out of the room.
The doctor picked up a sharp silver scalpel from the medical tray.
He stepped close to Lily’s face and reached up to pull down his surgical mask.

Lily gasped in pure shock, her heart stopping in her chest.
It was her grandfather, David's father, a man who had officially died of a heart attack five years ago.
