Chapter 7 - The Arrest

The blinding glare of the police flashlights completely disoriented David.

He tried to raise a hand to shield his eyes, but officers swarmed him instantly.

They ripped Lily from his arms and slammed him brutally onto the concrete floor.

Cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists, biting into his skin.

He screamed for Lily, begging the officers to listen to him.

Victoria rushed forward, throwing her arms around Lily in a theatrical display of maternal relief.

Lily fought back, kicking and screaming that Victoria was the one trying to kill them.

An officer read David his rights, officially charging him with the kidnapping and attempted murder of his own daughter.

They dragged David toward a waiting police cruiser, ignoring his desperate warnings about the gas chamber.

Victoria stroked Lily’s hair, looking down at the struggling child with a cold, victorious smile.

A female police officer approached them, holding a heavy wool blanket.

"The poor child is completely hysterical from the trauma," Victoria told the officer smoothly.

Victoria reached into her designer purse and pulled out a small, pre-filled medical syringe.

She claimed Dr. Evans had prescribed a mild sedative to calm Lily's nerves in case of an emergency.

Before the officer could ask any questions, Victoria jammed the needle into Lily’s shoulder.

Lily gasped, her vision immediately swimming as a dark, heavy numbness rushed through her veins.

The last thing Lily saw before losing consciousness was her father being shoved into the back of a police car.

When Lily finally opened her eyes again, the world was vibrating.

She was strapped tightly to a stretcher inside the back of a moving ambulance.

There were no windows, only harsh fluorescent lights humming overhead.

She looked at the two paramedics sitting across from her.

They weren't wearing hospital badges or name tags of any kind.

Lily tilted her head and realized they were driving down a bumpy, unpaved road.

Through a small gap in the front cabin curtain, she saw nothing but endless, sun-baked desert.
