Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth

David’s hands were shaking so hard he could barely grip the handles of his daughter’s wheelchair.
He looked from the puddle of freezing water on the concrete to Victoria, his wife of three years.
Victoria stood perfectly still with the green garden hose resting near her expensive boots.
Her face showed absolutely no emotion as she watched the water soak into the driveway.
Lily was crying silently in the chair, her small shoulders trembling from the biting cold.
David grabbed his jacket and wrapped it tightly around his shivering daughter.
He had always thought Victoria was a strict but caring stepmother.
Now, looking at the ice-cold expression on her face, he felt like he was staring at a stranger.
He picked Lily up in his arms, ignoring the wet clothes soaking through his own shirt.
He carried her past Victoria without saying a single word.
Victoria finally stepped forward and reached out to touch his arm.
David shoved her hand away violently.
He put Lily into the passenger seat of his car and turned the heater up to the maximum setting.
Victoria stood on the porch and watched them pull out of the driveway.
She didn't try to stop them, which only made David’s stomach twist into a tighter knot.
He drove straight toward the city hospital, constantly checking on Lily in the rearview mirror.
She had stopped crying, but her eyes were wide with a terror he had never seen before.
David carried her into the emergency room and demanded to see a doctor immediately.
A young pediatrician named Dr. Evans rushed them into a private examination room.
David explained the freezing water incident, pacing back and forth furiously.
Dr. Evans listened quietly while drawing a small vial of blood from Lily’s arm.
He promised to run a full toxicology and wellness panel right away.
David sat beside Lily's bed for an hour, holding her tiny, freezing hand.
Finally, the door clicked open and Dr. Evans walked back in holding a tablet.
The doctor's face had lost all of its previous warmth.
He looked at David with deep suspicion and slowly backed toward the door.
David stood up, confused by the sudden change in the room's atmosphere.
Dr. Evans pressed a red button on the wall and crossed his arms.
Two massive hospital security guards immediately stepped into the doorway, blocking the exit.

The doctor pointed a shaking finger directly at David's chest.
He told the guards to restrain David until the police arrived.
