Chapter 7 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I stared at Greg's name on the flight manifest in utter disbelief.
Greg was the godfather to my son and the man who helped me build this company.
"He was the inside man all along," Sarah deduced quickly.
"Greg hired Vanessa to frame you so he could steal the entire corporate empire."
Everything finally made sickening, horrible sense.
Greg was the only other person who possessed the master authorization codes for the bank transfers.
"We have to get to that airfield before that jet takes off," I said, grabbing Sarah's arm.
We raced back to her car and tore through the empty city streets.
The private airfield was located on the desolate outskirts of the city.
We smashed through the front security gate, shattering the wooden barrier into splinters.
A sleek white private jet was idling on the dark runway, its engines whining loudly.
Vanessa was dragging a terrified, coughing Noah across the wet tarmac.
Greg was standing near the boarding stairs, holding a briefcase stuffed with stolen hard drives.
I leaped out of the moving car and sprinted toward them.
"Let my son go!" I screamed over the deafening roar of the jet engines.
Greg turned around, a look of cold, calculating hatred crossing his face.
He did not hesitate or offer any villainous monologue.
He simply pulled a black pistol from his waistband and aimed it at me.
A loud gunshot echoed through the night air.
I felt a massive, burning impact tear through my right shoulder.

I collapsed onto the cold, hard asphalt, blood pouring from the open wound.
Greg stepped forward, pointing the gun directly at my head to finish the job.
