Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The heavy bronze globe struck Clara violently in the shoulder, knocking her suppressed pistol to the floor.
I immediately lunged across the expensive Persian rug, pinning my treacherous fiancée to the ground.
"You used me," I roared, pure rage fueling my adrenaline as I completely disarmed her.
Clara laughed bitterly, struggling wildly under my crushing grip.
"You were just a naive, spoiled little boy playing business, Julian," she spat with venom.
My grandfather walked calmly over to the mahogany desk, where Marcus was cowering in absolute terror.
"Please, Dad, she forced me to do it, I had absolutely no choice," Marcus begged, tears streaming down his cowardly face.
Ernesto simply looked at his son with profound, irreversible disappointment.
"You have always been weak, Marcus, and your weakness has finally destroyed you," Ernesto stated coldly.
My grandfather reached under the edge of his massive desk and pressed a hidden emergency button.
A massive steel blast door violently dropped down over the study's only exit, sealing us entirely inside.
"What did you just do?" Marcus screamed, scrambling desperately toward the impenetrable steel door.
"I just initiated the final security protocol," Ernesto explained, typing a rapid command into his laptop.
"The transfer you just authorized was not to the cartel's bank accounts, Marcus."
Ernesto turned the laptop screen around, showing a live video feed of the cartel's primary shipping port.
"I rerouted the transfer to alert the FBI cyber division to their exact geographic coordinates."
On the screen, dozens of heavily armed federal agents were violently raiding the cartel's massive steel shipments.
Clara stopped struggling, her face turning entirely pale as she realized her massive criminal empire was falling apart.
"You completely played us," Clara whispered in absolute horror.
Ernesto smiled, a genuine, terrifying Alvarez smile.
"I orchestrated this entire Thanksgiving disaster to flush out the traitors in my own bloodline," my grandfather confessed.
He looked at Sofia and me, his expression softening into one of immense pride.

"And I also needed to see if my grandson had the strength to truly lead this family into the future."
Suddenly, the heavy steel blast doors began to violently dent inward as someone outside attacked them with heavy explosives.
