Chapter 1 - The Feast of Power

In the Alvarez family, Thanksgiving was more of a ceremony than a dinner.
My grandfather, Don Ernesto Alvarez, owner of a fortune built with steel, oil, and secrets, presided over the table like a king on his throne.
Every year, the ritual was the same, filled with speeches, toasts, compliments, and the promise that the family is everything.
A promise that, over the years, began to sound completely empty.
That November night, the hall was full of sparkling lights, expensive crystal, and hushed murmurs.
The waiters seamlessly served exquisite turkey dishes, vintage wine, and reheated smiles.
And then we saw him.
My grandfather entered slowly, leaning heavily on his polished walnut cane.
There was a massive, ugly bruise clearly visible right under his left eye.
The murmur of the wealthy crowd was instantly silenced.
Everyone assumed he had suffered a terrible fall or an unfortunate accident in his old age.
He walked to the head of the long mahogany table and tapped his crystal glass with a silver spoon.
"I have something to confess," he announced, his gravelly voice echoing off the high ceiling.
The silence became so heavy that no one looked at him the same way again.
"This bruise was not an accident," Ernesto continued, scanning the terrified faces of his children and grandchildren.
"Someone sitting at this very table struck me in the dark of my study less than an hour ago."
Gasps filled the room as my uncles and aunts immediately began whispering accusations at one another.
"Silence," my grandfather roared, striking his cane violently against the hardwood floor.
"I know exactly who did it, and I know exactly why they did it."
He pulled a thick stack of legal documents from his tailored suit jacket and threw them onto the center of the table.
"This is my new, finalized will, completely disinheriting every single person in this room."
My uncle Marcus stood up rapidly, his face turning a dangerous shade of crimson.
"You cannot do this to us, Dad, we built this empire right alongside you," Marcus yelled angrily.
"You built nothing but debt and deceit," Ernesto fired back with absolute disgust.
"I am leaving the entire Alvarez steel and oil fortune to the only honest person left in this estate."
He pointed his trembling, wrinkled finger toward the back of the grand dining hall.
Standing in the shadows was Sofia, the young daughter of our head housekeeper.
Sofia slowly stepped forward, her eyes locked on my grandfather's face.

She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a heavy steel padlock and a thick chain.
Without saying a word, she wrapped the chain around the handles of the only exit door and locked us all inside.
