Chapter 12 - A Ghost in the Machine

The financial district safehouse was a windowless, concrete fortress buried three levels beneath an unassuming corporate parking garage. Sofia and I sat at the steel command table, watching the digital news feeds on the massive wall monitors. The morning sun was just rising over the city, but the Alvarez empire was already burning.
A breaking news banner flashed in bright red letters across the screen. One of our primary steel refineries on the eastern docks had exploded just moments before dawn. The official reports claimed it was a catastrophic gas leak, but I knew better. The Vanguard was erasing our assets, piece by piece, demonstrating their absolute, terrifying reach.
The heavy steel door of the bunker hissed open, and Ernesto walked in. He looked completely ragged, wearing a dark trench coat over his pajamas. He threw a thick leather binder onto the table, sending a cloud of ancient dust into the cold, recycled air.
"I spent decades paying them their blood money," Ernesto began, pacing the concrete floor like a caged tiger. "The Vanguard requires a twenty percent tribute on all corporate profits, completely off the books. I stopped paying them ten years ago when I faked your mother's death. I thought I had grown powerful enough to operate outside their jurisdiction."
Sofia opened the leather binder, her eyes scanning the faded financial ledgers and disturbing photographs of missing politicians. "These people do not just control money, Julian. They control the digital infrastructure of the entire stock exchange."
My phone suddenly buzzed on the steel table. The caller ID was completely blank. I pressed the speaker button, answering the call in front of my grandfather and Sofia.
"Julian Alvarez," a smooth, cultured, and entirely synthesized voice echoed through the bunker. "Your grandfather built his throne on our foundation. You thought you were fighting a war last week, but you were merely playing in the mud with criminals. The penalty for unpaid tribute is total liquidation."
"Who am I speaking to?" I demanded, my hands clenching into white-knuckled fists.
May you like
"I am the architect of this city," the voice replied calmly. "And by midnight tomorrow, your empire will be entirely dismantled, and your family will be erased from history. Consider the refinery a polite warning."
The line went dead. Sofia rapidly typed on her encrypted laptop, trying desperately to trace the digital signal, but the encryption was unlike anything we had ever seen. The ghost in the machine was entirely untraceable.
