Chapter 3 - The Corrupt Badge

The man approaching my window moved with the cold, calculated precision of a professional hitman rather than a police officer.

I quietly unbuckled my seatbelt and reached down to the hidden compartment beneath my driver's seat.

I wrapped my fingers around the grip of my registered, compact firearm, keeping it completely out of his line of sight.

"Roll down the window, keep your hands where I can see them," the man ordered, tapping the suppressed barrel against the glass.

I lowered the window just two inches, enough to hear him clearly but not enough for him to easily reach inside.

"Officer, can I see your badge and identification?" I asked, projecting absolute, unwavering authority.

He scoffed, a dark, menacing sound that sent a fresh wave of chills down Audrey's spine.

"Ethan Vance sends his regards, and he wants the laptop you stole," the man demanded, dropping the charade entirely.

He was a corrupt deputy on Ethan's expansive payroll, dispatched specifically to retrieve the incriminating evidence and eliminate us.

"The laptop is locked behind military-grade encryption," I lied smoothly, buying precious seconds to calculate my next move.

"I don't care about encryption, I just care about blowing your brains all over the dashboard," he sneered, raising the weapon toward the crack in the window.

Before he could pull the trigger, I forcefully slammed my car door outward with absolutely every ounce of strength I possessed.

The heavy steel door collided violently with his knees, sending him crashing backward onto the loose gravel.

I threw the car into drive and slammed my foot onto the gas pedal, tearing away from the shoulder in a cloud of dust.

The corrupt deputy fired two wild shots, shattering my rear windshield, but the bullets miraculously missed us.

"Get your head down!" I shouted to Audrey as I violently swerved the car to avoid the flying glass.

I took the next sharp exit at a dangerous speed, plunging us deep into the winding, unlit backroads of the dense forest.

We drove in terrifying silence for twenty minutes, taking random turns until I was absolutely certain we had lost him.

I finally parked the damaged sedan behind an abandoned barn, shutting off the headlights and cutting the engine completely.

Audrey was hyperventilating, clutching the encrypted laptop to her chest as if it were a fragile newborn child.

I unbuckled my seatbelt, pulled her into a fierce embrace, and stroked her hair until her breathing slowly leveled out.

"He is never going to stop, Liam," she wept into my shoulder, utterly exhausted by the relentless pursuit.

"He doesn't have a choice anymore," I replied, gently pulling the laptop from her tight grip.

I opened the computer and booted up a highly specialized decryption software I had designed during my federal days.

"There is one last folder you told me you were too afraid to open," I reminded her, referring to a massive, hidden zip file she had discovered on Ethan's home network.

She typed in her complex password, and the heavily guarded folder finally unlocked before our eyes.

We stared at the glowing screen in absolute, paralyzing horror as the true depth of Ethan's criminal empire was revealed.

He wasn't just laundering money for local politicians and dirty judges.

The meticulously organized spreadsheets clearly proved he was the primary money launderer for a notoriously violent international drug cartel.

Suddenly, my phone rang with an incoming call from Audrey's mother, Martha.

I answered it cautiously and put it on speaker, hoping she was calling to check on her daughter.

Instead, Ethan's cold, arrogant voice echoed through the dark cabin of our car.

"If you want to see her mother alive again, you will bring that laptop to my private hunting lodge in exactly one hour."
