Chapter 2 - The Midnight Escape

I quickly closed the velvet box and shoved it into my jacket pocket, my mind racing through every possible tactical scenario.

Ethan had somehow bypassed the hotel's elite security team to deliver a death threat directly into our locked bridal suite.

I turned to Audrey, keeping my expression entirely neutral so I would not amplify her rising panic.

"We need to leave this hotel right now," I instructed, grabbing her duffel bag from the closet.

She did not argue or ask questions, instinctively slipping into a pair of jeans and a dark sweater over her shivering frame.

I packed her encrypted laptop, knowing it held the audio files and banking transfers that would permanently bury her stepfather.

We slipped out through the service elevator, entirely avoiding the crowded main lobby where Ethan was still holding court.

The cool night air hit us as we stepped into the dimly lit underground parking garage.

I unlocked my modest sedan and ushered Audrey into the passenger seat, constantly scanning the concrete pillars for any movement.

As I pulled out onto the quiet city streets, my secure phone vibrated heavily against the center console.

It was a direct, encrypted call from Sophia, calling from her secure office at the state capital.

"Liam, we have a massive problem," Sophia said urgently, her voice completely stripped of its usual professional calm.

"I submitted the emergency asset freeze, but someone inside the magistrate's office flagged the request and leaked it."

I gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned a stark, bruised white.

"Ethan knows we are coming for his money," I deduced, watching the headlights in my rearview mirror suspiciously.

"Worse than that," Sophia countered, the sound of frantic typing echoing in the background of the call.

"He just filed an emergency police report claiming you assaulted him and kidnapped Audrey against her will."

Audrey let out a muffled sob, covering her mouth with her trembling hands as the reality of his power set in.

"He is using his connections to weaponize the local police force against us," I explained to Sophia over the Bluetooth speaker.

Sophia ordered me to get out of the city limits immediately and head toward a federal safe house on the coast.

I promised to update her in exactly one hour and abruptly ended the secure connection.

We were driving down a desolate stretch of highway, surrounded by dense, towering pine trees.

I glanced over at Audrey, who was staring blankly out the window, completely paralyzed by the familiar grip of absolute terror.

I reached across the console and took her cold hand, promising her that we were not going to lose this fight.

Suddenly, the piercing wail of a police siren shattered the midnight silence, and bright red and blue lights flooded the cabin.

A heavily modified local sheriff's cruiser aggressively pulled up right behind my bumper, riding dangerously close to our car.

"Liam, they found us," Audrey panicked, tears streaming down her pale, scarred cheeks.

I slowly pulled over to the gravel shoulder, instructing her to keep her hands completely visible on the dashboard.

The officer stepped out of his cruiser, but he was not wearing a standard police uniform.

He was wearing a dark tactical vest, and instead of a flashlight, he approached our window with a drawn, suppressed pistol.
