Chapter 1 - The Wedding Gift

The music from the ballroom downstairs echoed softly through the marble hallways of the luxury hotel.
I stood perfectly still, meeting Ethan Vance’s cold, arrogant gaze without flinching.
He smiled, taking a slow sip of his expensive champagne, entirely convinced he had intimidated me.
"Take care of her," Ethan said smoothly, patting my shoulder with a heavy, threatening hand.
"Don't worry," I replied, my voice steady and completely devoid of fear.
"Tonight, I finally understood everything."
His smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of confusion crossing his dark eyes.
Before he could respond, I turned my back on him and walked toward the grand staircase.
My heart pounded against my ribs, but I forced my breathing to remain perfectly calm and measured.
I had just unleashed a federal investigation that would completely obliterate his corrupt construction empire.
When I reached our bridal suite, I immediately locked the heavy oak door and slid the deadbolt into place.
Audrey was sitting on the edge of the large canopy bed, clutching the white silk robe tightly around her fragile shoulders.
She looked up at me with terrified, tear-filled eyes, her hands shaking violently.
"Liam, what did you do?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning.
"I made the call to my old unit, and Sophia is securing the warrants right now," I told her gently.
I knelt down in front of her and kissed her trembling hands, promising that she was finally safe.
She let out a ragged breath, leaning forward to rest her forehead against my shoulder.
"He is not just going to let this happen, Liam," she warned me, her body completely rigid with dread.
"Ethan has local judges, police officers, and powerful politicians living deep inside his expansive pockets."
I assured her that my federal connections operated far outside his local sphere of corrupt influence.
I spent the next ten minutes holding her, whispering promises that the nightmare was finally coming to an end.
I explained that my former supervisor, Sophia, was the most ruthless financial investigator on the eastern seaboard.
She was already quietly freezing his offshore accounts and pulling the massive ledgers from his shell corporations.
Audrey finally managed a small, fragile smile, the tension slowly leaving her scarred back.
I stood up to pour us both a glass of water from the minibar, hoping to calm her rapidly fraying nerves.
The luxurious suite was quiet, bathed in the soft, warm light of the crystal chandelier above us.
That was when I noticed the sleek, black velvet box sitting directly in the center of our room's glass coffee table.
It absolutely had not been there when we left for the reception just a few hours ago.
My law enforcement instincts flared immediately, sending a sharp wave of adrenaline through my veins.
I motioned for Audrey to stay back on the bed as I carefully approached the small, unmarked package.
I used a clean napkin to slowly lift the heavy lid of the mysterious box, careful not to disturb any potential fingerprints.
Inside rested a pristine, high-caliber silver bullet, gleaming dangerously under the dim hotel lighting.
Beside the lethal ammunition was a small, handwritten note printed meticulously on Ethan's personal corporate stationery.

My blood ran entirely cold as I read the chilling words written in his unmistakable, sharp handwriting.
The note simply read: "I always finish what I start, and your new husband is officially out of time."
