Chapter 4 - The Holding Cell

The cold steel bench of the precinct holding cell offered absolutely no comfort.
I sat shivering in the dim light, my mind completely consumed by the image of my children being handed over to the monster who framed me.
Marcus arrived three hours later, his briefcase overflowing with urgent legal filings.
He looked completely exhausted as he sat in the chair across from the metal bars.
The judge had denied my initial bail request because the fabricated embezzlement charges involved an alleged flight risk.
Marcus explained that Brent had planned this conspiracy for nearly a year.
Brent's failing business was hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to a dangerous underground gambling syndicate.
My mother had willingly sacrificed my freedom and my children to save her precious son from loan sharks.
I slammed my fists against the metal bars, tears of absolute rage streaming down my face.
I told Marcus I needed to get out of this cell today, no matter the cost.
Marcus lowered his voice to a hushed whisper, glancing nervously down the empty hallway.
He told me there was only one way to bypass the judge's bail denial.
He pulled a small, burner cell phone from his pocket and slid it across the floor into my cell.
He instructed me to call the only person who had enough corrupt influence to force the judge's hand.
I stared at the phone, knowing exactly who he was talking about.
It was my ex-husband, David, a ruthless corporate fixer who had spent years trying to destroy my life during our divorce.
Calling him meant making a deal with the devil.
But the thought of Emma and Noah sleeping in Brent's house left me with no other choice.

I dialed the number, and David answered on the first ring, his voice dripping with terrifying amusement.
He agreed to get me out of jail, but he demanded full custody of my children in return.
