Chapter 2 - The Stolen Identity

The sound of Brent's arrogant laughter echoed through the phone speaker.
I felt the blood drain entirely from my face.
I hung up the phone without saying a word and immediately called Marcus, my attorney.
Marcus answered on the first ring, sounding equally panicked.
He told me he had just checked the county registry after receiving an alert from the title company.
Brent was telling the truth about the fraudulent transfer.
My mother had somehow bypassed the notary requirements and illegally transferred my two-million-dollar property directly into Brent's name.
But the horror did not stop with the loss of the house.
Marcus clicked his keyboard furiously on the other end of the line.
He revealed that immediately after acquiring the forged deed, Brent had taken out a massive commercial loan against the property.
Brent had borrowed over a million dollars against the house and subsequently defaulted on the payments.
The bank was not just coming to repossess the house.
Because my forged signature was listed as the primary guarantor on the commercial loan, the bank was coming after my personal assets.
My savings accounts, my children's college funds, and my own home were now frozen.
My mother had not just humiliated my children over a few toys.
She had actively colluded with Brent to bankrupt me and destroy my family's entire future.
I walked into the kitchen, my hands shaking violently as I poured a cup of black coffee.
Someone began pounding aggressively on my front door.

I looked through the peephole, expecting to see a banking official or a process server.
Instead, two uniformed police officers were standing on my porch, holding a warrant for my immediate arrest.
