Chapter 3 - The False Accusations

I opened the door slowly, my heart hammering furiously against my ribs.
The taller officer did not even ask for my name before reaching for his handcuffs.
He informed me that I was being placed under arrest for elder abuse and corporate embezzlement.
I stared at him in complete disbelief.
My mother had called the police an hour ago, claiming I had violently shoved her down the stairs before fleeing the New Year's Eve party.
Furthermore, Brent had provided the police with fabricated financial ledgers.
The fake documents made it look like I was the one who stole the million-dollar loan from his business accounts.
They had orchestrated the perfect frame-up to ensure I went to prison while they kept the stolen money.
The officers grabbed my wrists, pulling my arms behind my back.
Emma and Noah ran out of their bedrooms, screaming and crying as they watched me being restrained.
I begged the officers to let me call my sister-in-law to watch the children, but they refused.
A sleek black car pulled into my driveway, tires screeching against the cold asphalt.
A woman in a sharp gray suit stepped out and flashed a golden badge at the officers.
She was an investigator with Child Protective Services.
My mother had intentionally timed the false police report so that CPS would arrive to take my children away into the foster system.
Noah wrapped his arms around my leg, sobbing and refusing to let go.
The CPS worker gently pulled him away from me, her eyes filled with clinical pity.

As I was dragged toward the back of the police cruiser, the CPS worker handed me a piece of paper.
It was a temporary custody order granting immediate guardianship of Emma and Noah to my brother Brent.
