Chapter 19 - The Setup

I used the laptop to draft an anonymous, highly encrypted email directly to Director Vance's private government address.

I attached a heavily watermarked, ten-second clip of Silas breaking down Henderson's door, intentionally cutting the video right before the murder occurred. I typed a single sentence: I have the rest of the footage, including the murder, the weapon, and proof of conspiracy involving David Sterling. Meet me at these coordinates with a heavily armed federal extraction team, or the evidence burns.

I hit send. Now came the most terrifying part of the plan.

Vance needed time to mobilize a federal tactical unit outside David's sphere of influence. But David also needed to know where I was so he could walk directly into the snare.

I waited until nightfall, the silence of the mountains heavy and oppressive. I took my original cell phone—the one I had kept powered off since fleeing my house—and walked to the edge of the property line.

I turned the power on. The screen illuminated the darkness. I watched the signal bars slowly climb. One bar. Two bars.

I let the phone stay connected to the cellular network for exactly thirty seconds. It was more than enough time for David's illegal surveillance tech to ping my exact GPS coordinates.

I smashed the phone against a rock until it was entirely destroyed, kicking the pieces into the snow.

I ran back into the cabin and told the children we were going to play a game. We were going to hide in the reinforced root cellar beneath the kitchen floorboards, and they had to be absolutely silent no matter what they heard.

I locked them safely in the dark cellar, armed with blankets and flashlights. I remained above, sitting in a wooden rocking chair facing the front door.

I placed the bloody security camera on the table in front of me, resting a heavy, loaded hunting rifle across my lap.

The bait was set. Now, I just had to wait for the wolves.
