Chapter 8 - The Loan Sharks

The thirty men stepped out of the shadows like a silent, deadly army.
Their leader, a tall man with a scarred face, walked slowly toward Eric.
The leader's name was Victor, the boss of the loan shark syndicate.
Victor ordered his men to take Eric's gun away.
Eric visibly trembled as a massive thug snatched the weapon from his hand.
Victor looked at the burning car and then looked at my terrified face.
He realized exactly what Eric had been trying to do.
Victor slapped Eric across the face with a brutal, sickening force.
He told Eric that dead brides do not pay off ten-million-dollar debts.
Victor realized the life insurance scam was a desperate, sloppy gamble that would attract the police.
He ordered his men to tie Eric up and throw him in the trunk of their armored van.
Eric dropped to his knees and began sobbing like a child.
He begged Victor for one more week to get the money.
Victor ignored him and turned his cold, dead eyes toward me.
He demanded to know if I had access to Eric's hidden offshore accounts.
Eric suddenly screamed that I was the one hoarding all the secret syndicate money.
He lied to Victor to buy himself time, pinning the entire financial blame on me.

Victor pulled out a long, serrated hunting knife.
He stepped toward me and said we were going to have a very painful conversation.
