Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Needle

Eric's mother smiled a cold and terrifying smile.

She said I was going to walk back out there and finish the wedding ceremony like a good little bride.

I told her I would rather die than marry her monster of a son.

She raised the syringe and said she could easily arrange that option right now.

She lunged at me with surprising speed for an older woman.

I dodged to the left and she crashed into the vanity mirror.

Glass shattered everywhere as she stumbled backward.

Chloe grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the bedside table.

She swung it hard and struck the mother-in-law on the back of the head.

The older woman collapsed onto the carpet in a heap of expensive silk.

The syringe rolled safely under the plush sofa.

I stood over her, breathing heavily and trembling with adrenaline.

We used my torn veil to tie her hands tightly behind her back.

I grabbed the mother-in-law's cell phone from her pocket, hoping it had a special network connection.

The screen required a complex passcode that I did not know.

Someone began violently pounding on the suite door again.

Eric yelled that he was going to break the door down if I did not open it in three seconds.

Chloe and I quickly dragged the heavy sofa in front of the door as a barricade.

The wood of the door frame began to splinter under Eric's brutal kicks.

I realized we could not fight off Eric and his thirty goons by ourselves.

I looked desperately at the small vent near the ceiling.

I climbed onto a chair and ripped the metal grate off the wall.

Suddenly, a gunshot rang out and blew the lock completely off the door.

The venue manager stepped into the room holding a smoking pistol.
