Chapter 8 - The Desperate Defusal

The bright red numbers on the explosive vest ticked down mercilessly, casting a terrifying glow in the dark cell.

I rushed to Sophia, frantically analyzing the incredibly complex wiring harness strapped to her chest.

“Get out of here, Dominic!” Sophia cried out, fighting fiercely against the heavy leather restraints.

“Please, just go take care of Lily for me!”

I ignored her completely, pulling my tactical knife and carefully cutting the thick straps binding her arms.

“I lost you once, Sophia, and I am absolutely not doing it again,” I stated with unwavering determination.

Carlo Vitale scrambled toward the open cell door, leaving Marco bleeding heavily on the concrete floor.

“Enjoy your romantic reunion in hell!” Carlo gloated, sprinting out into the dark hallway.

I didn't have time to chase him; the timer was currently sitting at thirty-five seconds.

The explosive device was heavily booby-trapped with three identical green wires crossing the main detonator cap.

I looked desperately at Marco, who was clutching his bleeding side and groaning in severe pain.

“Which wire bypasses the fail-safe, Marco?” I demanded, knowing he had trained as a demolitions expert in the military.

Marco coughed up blood, squinting hard at the blinking device on his sister's chest.

“Cut the middle green wire, but you have to do it exactly at the same time you sever the main power line,” Marco gasped.

The timer dropped to exactly ten seconds.

I wedged my knife under the middle green wire and grabbed the thick black power cable with my left hand.

I looked deeply into Sophia’s terrified eyes, kissing her forehead gently.

“I love you,” I whispered, praying it wouldn't be my final words.

At exactly three seconds, I forcefully yanked the black cable and sliced the green wire simultaneously.

The digital timer instantly went completely black, emitting a soft, harmless click.

I ripped the deactivated vest off her body and pulled her into a massive, desperate embrace.

We held each other tightly for a brief second before the deafening roar of a helicopter engine echoed from outside.

Carlo was actively escaping the compound, and I absolutely could not let him survive the night.
