Chapter 2 - The Enemy Inside

I stared at the bloody weapon, realizing instantly that my fiancée's family was involved.
Isabella Vitale wasn't just a beautiful socialite I was supposed to marry to unite our crime families.
She was an active threat who had discovered my past and decided to eliminate it entirely.
I pulled my own weapon from my shoulder holster and sprinted back toward the main ballroom.
“Enzo, lock down the entire estate right now!” I roared into my encrypted earpiece.
“No one leaves, and shoot any Vitale man who tries to bypass the gates.”
I burst through the double doors of the grand ballroom, causing the string quartet to stop playing immediately.
Two hundred elite guests turned to stare at me in absolute shock.
I scanned the massive room, my eyes frantically searching the crowd for Isabella.
She was completely gone.
I looked toward the grand staircase where little Lily had been sitting just moments before.
The spot under the stairs was empty, leaving only the half-eaten Christmas cookie on the floor.
Pure, unadulterated panic gripped my chest.
I ran toward the kitchen, kicking the swinging doors open with massive force.
The culinary staff screamed and scattered as I stormed through the stainless steel prep stations.
I reached the rear exit leading to the snowy courtyard and pushed the heavy metal door open.
The freezing winter wind whipped against my face as I stepped out into the darkness.
Isabella was standing near the frozen fountain, wearing her expensive champagne silk gown in the snow.
She was holding terrified little Lily tightly by the hair.

Isabella turned toward me, a wicked, emotionless smile spreading across her beautiful face.
She raised a silver pistol and pressed the barrel directly against my three-year-old daughter’s temple.
