Chapter 6 - The Ghost from the Past

I stared in absolute shock at the man standing at the top of the staircase holding a submachine gun.

It was Marco, Sophia’s older brother, who had supposedly died in a massive warehouse explosion three years ago.

“You are supposed to be dead,” I said, keeping my rifle aimed squarely at his chest.

Marco sneered, slowly descending the carpeted stairs while keeping his weapon completely ready.

“Carlo Vitale pulled me out of the fire you started, Dominic, and he showed me the absolute truth.”

“He told me you ordered the hit on my crew to consolidate your power in the harbor.”

My mind raced fiercely to comprehend the massive web of lies Carlo had carefully spun.

“Carlo ordered that hit, Marco, and he blamed me so you would eventually become his loyal attack dog!” I shouted over the gunfire outside.

Marco shook his head, his eyes burning with years of manipulated, misguided hatred.

“You ruined my sister's life, and now she is finally going to pay the ultimate price for your sins.”

He raised his weapon, preparing to unleash a deadly spray of bullets down into the foyer.

“I have a daughter, Marco!” I roared desperately, tossing my heavy rifle completely onto the marble floor.

Marco froze entirely, his finger hovering dangerously over the sensitive trigger.

“Sophia gave birth to my little girl three years ago, which makes her your biological niece,” I explained rapidly.

“Carlo is going to execute the mother of my child tonight, and you are actively helping him do it.”

Marco’s fierce expression faltered, a profound flicker of doubt suddenly crossing his scarred face.

He lowered his weapon slightly, the horrifying truth finally beginning to penetrate his brainwashed mind.

“He told me Sophia was living happily in Europe,” Marco whispered, his voice cracking with sudden, immense guilt.

“He lied to you, and we have to save her right now before he pulls the trigger,” I pleaded.

Marco suddenly spun around, aiming his weapon down the dark, massive hallway behind him.

“She is locked in the subterranean interrogation cell, but Carlo is already down there with the executioner.”
