Chapter 7 - The Backseat Discovery

I stared at the text message on Rachel's phone, my blood running completely cold in my veins.

"Do not open that door, it could be an explosive," I warned Rachel as she reached for the handle.

Rachel shook her head, her face pale but determined.

"If he wanted us dead, the man on the highway would not have missed on purpose," Rachel deduced.

She carefully opened the rear door of the Honda and looked inside.

Resting perfectly on the center seat was a thick, black leather ledger.

I recognized the book immediately because Derek kept it locked in a heavy floor safe in his home office.

I reached into the car and opened the heavy cover.

The pages were filled with complex transaction records, offshore account numbers, and massive cash transfers.

I realized with absolute dread that Derek's supposed "client dinners" were actually high-level meetings for a massive money-laundering syndicate.

He had been washing millions of dollars for a ruthless criminal cartel.

But the most horrifying discovery was on the very last page of the ledger.

Derek had listed a massive, unpaid debt of ten million dollars, owed directly to the cartel boss.

And right next to the massive debt, he had forged my exact signature as the primary guarantor.

"He did not just frame you for stealing," Rachel whispered, looking over my shoulder in absolute horror.

"He legally transferred a ten-million-dollar cartel death sentence onto your head."

If the cartel came looking for their missing money, they would hunt me down instead of him.

The man in the black SUV on the highway was not sent by Derek to stop me.

He was a cartel enforcer sent to collect the debt Derek claimed I had stolen.

We could not use Rachel's car, and the police were currently locking down the hospital above us.

I spotted a rusted hospital maintenance van parked near the loading dock with the keys still sitting in the ignition.

"We are stealing that van," I told Rachel, securing Emily tightly against my chest.

We climbed into the filthy vehicle and sped out of the parking garage just as two police cruisers blocked the main exit.

We drove deep into the rural countryside, completely abandoning the main highways.

Rachel finally pulled into the parking lot of a cheap, run-down motel completely hidden behind a dense forest.

We paid in cash and locked ourselves inside a dingy room that smelled strongly of stale smoke and bleach.

I sat on the edge of the lumpy mattress, exhausted and terrified, while I turned on the old television for background noise.

The local news station was broadcasting a breaking news alert that made my heart completely stop.

A picture of my face was plastered across the television screen next to a bright red Amber Alert graphic.

The news anchor announced that I was an armed, highly dangerous fugitive who had kidnapped a newborn child from the hospital.
