Chapter 5 - The Legal Trap

I pulled Emily closer to my chest, my entire body shaking with pure terror.
"Get him out of here right now!" I screamed at the nurses.
Derek put his hands up defensively, playing the role of the terrified, loving husband to absolute perfection.
"Please, sweetheart, you are not thinking clearly," Derek said, his voice dripping with fake sympathy.
He turned to the older police officer and let out a heavy, rehearsed sigh.
"She has been highly delusional for weeks, and I was terrified she would hurt the baby," Derek explained to the cops.
Rachel aggressively pushed Derek backward, telling him to stay away from my hospital bed.
The police officer quickly intervened, grabbing Rachel by the arm and threatening to arrest her for assault.
"Mr. Davis claims that his wife stole highly sensitive corporate property from his home office before fleeing," the officer stated.
"I did not steal a single thing from him," I sobbed, feeling completely trapped.
"Then you will not mind if we search the hospital bag you brought with you," the officer replied coldly.
I pointed to the black duffel bag resting on the visitor chair, completely confident they would find nothing but maternity clothes.
The officer unzipped the bag and began digging through my neatly folded pajamas.
Suddenly, he stopped and pulled out a heavy, rectangular object wrapped in brown packing tape.
He tore the tape open, revealing a massive, undeniable stack of hundred-dollar bills.
Then, he reached deeper into the bag and pulled out a loaded, unregistered handgun.
"Is this your weapon, ma'am?" the officer asked, stepping away from the bed and resting his hand on his own holster.

Derek smiled a wicked, terrifying smile from the corner of the room.
He had packed my hospital bag yesterday morning, planting the illicit cash and the weapon to ensure I would be arrested.
