Chapter 6 - The Escape Plan

"I have never seen that gun before in my entire life!" I screamed, panic tightening my chest like a vice.
The police officer ignored my desperate pleas and pulled a pair of heavy metal handcuffs from his belt.
"Ma'am, I have to place you under arrest for grand larceny and possession of an unregistered firearm," the officer announced.
He told the nurses to take Emily from my arms so he could properly secure my wrists.
"Do not touch my baby!" I cried, backing as far against the headboard as I physically could.
Rachel knew we were completely out of legal options, so she decided to break the law to save us.
Without any warning, Rachel grabbed a heavy metal IV pole and smashed it directly into the glass fire alarm panel on the wall.
The deafening, piercing sound of the hospital fire alarm immediately flooded the entire maternity ward.
Thick emergency fire doors automatically began slamming shut in the hallways, and strobe lights flashed blindly.
The sudden chaos startled the police officers, causing them to step back toward the doorway to assess the threat.
"Get in the laundry cart right now!" Rachel ordered, pointing to a massive canvas bin near the bathroom.
I ignored my severe physical pain, clutching Emily tightly as I threw myself into the deep canvas cart.
Rachel quickly piled dirty hospital gowns and used towels over my head, perfectly concealing me and the baby.
She pushed the heavy cart right past the distracted officers, shouting that she was helping evacuate the floor.
We navigated the chaotic, crowded hallways, blending in perfectly with the panicked hospital staff.
Rachel pushed the cart all the way to the chilly underground parking garage and helped me climb out.
We ran toward her gray Honda, desperately hoping to drive away before the police realized I was gone.
But when we reached the parking spot, Rachel dropped her car keys onto the concrete floor in pure horror.
All four tires on her vehicle had been completely slashed to the rims.

Then, Rachel's cell phone buzzed in her pocket with a brand new text message from Derek.
The message read, "Check the backseat of your car, sweetheart."
