Chapter 4 - The Delivery Room

"That is a complete lie!" I screamed, the pain and panic merging into one overwhelming sensation.

"My husband is incredibly abusive, and he is trying to trap me," I pleaded with the doctor.

Rachel stepped directly between me and the administrator, looking completely ready to start a physical fight.

"If you do not deliver this baby right now, I will sue this entire hospital for gross medical negligence," Rachel threatened loudly.

The doctor looked at my terrified, sweating face and made a split decision.

"I do not care what the insurance file says, she is having this baby right now," the doctor declared.

The administrator scoffed but stepped out of the room to make a phone call.

For the next two hours, I fought through the most agonizing physical pain of my entire life.

Rachel held my hand so tightly that I thought my fingers were going to break.

I channeled every ounce of anger I had toward Derek into pushing.

At exactly three in the morning, the room was finally filled with the beautiful sound of a crying baby.

My daughter, Emily, was born healthy, loud, and absolutely perfect.

The nurse cleaned her off and gently placed her warm, tiny body onto my bare chest.

I cried tears of pure joy, realizing that leaving Derek had not made me homeless.

It had finally made me free to protect my child.

But my beautiful moment of peace was violently shattered just a few minutes later.

The delivery room doors swung wide open, hitting the wall with a loud crash.

A heavy-set security guard stepped into the room, followed closely by two armed local police officers.

And walking right behind them, wearing a perfectly tailored designer suit, was Derek.

"Thank God you found my sick wife," Derek said, perfectly faking a look of deep, heartbreaking concern.
