Chapter 2 - The Highway Chase

I twisted around in my seat, ignoring the sharp pain radiating through my abdomen.

Through the rear window, I could clearly see the menacing headlights of the black SUV staying perfectly matched with our speed.

"Are you sure they are following us?" I asked, my breathing becoming shallow.

Rachel swerved into the left lane without using her blinker to test the driver.

The SUV immediately mirrored her aggressive maneuver, closing the distance between our bumpers.

"I am absolutely positive," Rachel said, gripping the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white.

Another contraction hit me, completely stealing the breath from my lungs.

I gripped the dashboard and let out a loud, involuntary scream.

"Breathe deeply, we just need to make it across the state line," Rachel urged.

I checked my phone and saw fourteen missed calls from Derek.

He was supposed to be at a client dinner, so there was no logical reason for him to be calling me this frantically.

"Derek knows I am gone," I gasped through the pain.

"He probably found the ring and called his private security guy," Rachel guessed.

Rachel slammed her foot on the gas pedal, pushing the small Honda to eighty-five miles per hour on the dark stretch of highway.

The SUV did not back down, its powerful engine roaring as it pulled up directly into our blind spot.

I rolled down my window just a fraction to get a better look at the driver.

The tinted window of the SUV slowly rolled down as we sped down the empty interstate.

I expected to see Derek’s furious face screaming at me to pull over.

Instead, I saw a terrifying man with a thick scar across his neck holding a suppressed handgun.

He pointed the dark weapon directly at Rachel's head.
