Chapter 8 - The Arrest

Agent Miller walked down the center aisle of the courtroom, flanked by four federal marshals and two state troopers.

“David Vance,” Miller’s voice boomed, echoing off the mahogany walls. “You are under arrest.”

David leaped to his feet, knocking his chair over. “You can't arrest me in a courthouse! I have rights! Mom, do something!”

Helen stood up, shrieking, “This is a witch hunt! My son is innocent! She planted that evidence!”

A state trooper calmly walked over to Helen and pulled out a second pair of handcuffs. “Helen Vance, you are also under arrest for conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion.”

The color drained completely from Helen’s face. The designer purse slipped from her fingers, spilling lipsticks and credit cards across the courtroom floor. “Me? I didn't do anything! David told me the money was from his consulting business! It was his idea!”

David stared at his mother, utterly betrayed. “You’re selling me out? I paid for your Mercedes with that money!”

“You’re a terrible son!” Helen screamed back as the troopers secured her wrists.

I watched impassively as the two of them turned on each other like cornered rats. The arrogant facade had completely crumbled, leaving nothing but two greedy, miserable criminals being marched out in front of a stunned courtroom.

Rachel reached over and squeezed my hand. We didn't need to say a word. The monsters were finally in cages.
