Chapter 1 - The Emergency Lockdown

The silence in the trauma bay was deafening. The attending physician, Dr. Evans, slowly lowered Chloe’s medical tablet, his eyes darting between my gold investigator’s badge and David’s rapidly paling face.
“Sarah, put the badge away,” David hissed, his voice dropping to a desperate, threatening whisper. “You’re embarrassing yourself. She’s my daughter. I make the medical decisions here.”
“Not according to the forged documents you submitted to Blue Cross last month,” I replied, my voice as cold and hard as the sleet hitting the hospital window. “You listed me as her legal adoptive mother to bypass the secondary approval for her psychiatric and neurological evaluations. The same evaluations you billed for, but she never attended.”
Helen, my mother-in-law, stepped forward, her diamond bracelets clinking. “Doctor, my son’s wife is clearly having a hysterical episode. Have security remove her so we can treat my granddaughter.”
Dr. Evans didn't move. He looked at Chloe’s pale, unconscious form, then directly at me. “Agent, what exactly are you alleging?”
“Medical neglect and insurance fraud,” I stated clearly, pulling out my phone. “The medication she was supposed to be taking for her seizure disorder—the one my husband claimed he picked up from the pharmacy three days ago—was never filled. He pocketed the insurance payout for the out-of-network specialty compound. She collapsed because she’s in withdrawal.”
David lunged toward me, his hands outstretched. “Give me your phone, Sarah!”
He never made it. Two ER orderlies, sensing the escalating violence, stepped in and shoved David back against the wall.
“Lock down this room,” Dr. Evans ordered the nurses, his demeanor instantly shifting from a tired doctor to a fierce protector. He turned to David. “Sir, step away from the patient. If you touch her or this agent again, I will have you arrested for assault in a medical facility.”
I dialed a number I had memorized from Chloe’s hidden case file. It rang twice before a woman answered, her voice trembling.

“Hello?”
“Rachel,” I said softly. “This is Sarah. Chloe’s stepmother. She’s at Memorial Hospital. You need to come right now.”
